Aside from the obvious majestic jungle, Bukit Lawang offers a multitude of exciting sights and scenes for the young traveller. Read on to find out our top five kid-friendly locations in Bukit Lawang!
1. Rindu Alam
Located right next to the river not only does Rindu Alam boast a large grassy lawn, they also have also fashioned a shallow ‘river pool’, meaning younger age groups can safely paddle and swim in the water. With lots of tall trees shading the grassy areas, Rindu Alam is a great place to play safely in the heat of the day. However, remember at the weekend it is very busy with local guests (lots of bbq’s, karaoke, and people asking for your families picture!) so make sure to take a mid-week trip to enjoy this riverside gem!
2. Bahorok Resto View
Found a 15minute bicycle ride (8 minute tuk tuk ride) from Sumatra Expedition Lodge, Bohorok Resto View is a glorious expanse of grassy field and foliage, enveloped in a shimmering of fish ponds. With many seating areas dispersed around its large lawn, along with swings and shaded seating areas, it’s the perfect place for playtime in the sun, and on of our favourite locations for an early evening picnic! With a great selection of dishes on offer we highly suggest taking a trip outside of the Bukit Lawang Toursit centre to visit this beautiful space!
3. The camping ground
If you are looking for the best place to swim in Bukit Lawang, look no further! What with its great on foot accessibility and unusually deep waters, the camping ground makes for the perfect place to soak up the Sumatran sun. With a rubber ring rental and local warung plus a football field located just above the waters edge, you can really make a day out of your visit. Just make sure to bring some strong mosquito repellent, and keep an eye out for the very cheeky macaque monkeys!
With daily kindergarten classes and weekly English, conservation, business, playgroup and fitness classes (for children and adults alike) the Bukit Lawang Trust is acts at the very centre of the community. For the last 20 years a mixture of international and local staff and volunteers have ensured the Trust continues to provide relevant, meaningful and dynamic curriculums and lessons to their ever-growing student body.
A visit to the community centre will no doubt provide you and your kids with an eye-opening experience into the life of the local community, along with the many challenges they face, educational, economically and environmentally. Make sure to get in contact with the current team at the Trust before you visit in order to schedule a tour, and don’t forget to ask them for their current fitness class schedule; yoga, jungle fit and Zumba are not to be missed!
If you’re looking for a place to play that’s a little closer to home, why not check out Project Wings’ Recycle village? Just 15minutes walk from Sumatra Expedition Lodge, the recycle village is set within a beautiful setting of undulating soft slopes and floral gardens. Fitted with its own café, auditorium, herbal garden and indoor sports pitch there’s lots to do in this little slice of paradise, so don’t forget your trainers! Make sure to get in touch with the team before you arrive to arrange a tour, along with an explanation of all the work they’ve been doing in and around the local community.
