Looking for authentic activities that will help you explore our Batak Sumatran culture further? Then look no further; we offer many different traditional activities (aside from jungle trekking) that will deepen your understanding of and connection to North Sumatran traditional living.
Many of these activities are also suitable for children; just please let us know in advance so we can organise appropriate support!
Eco batik printing
650.000 per person
Learn the traditional techniques of flower dyeing, to produce beautiful and unique 'eco batik' patterns. These lengths of material are stunning as bed throws, curtains, or napkins; we have even had guests use our local seamstress to turn their patterns into one-of-a-kind skirts and shirts!
Please note this activity takes about 4 hours, and prices include all materials and refreshments.
Traditional Carving Workshop

Learn from local artisan craftsmen how to carve using traditional sumatran methods and reclaimed wood! With a wide variety of designs and types of wood, this activity is perfect for all ages and skill level; best of all you will leave with a lovely souvenir to represent your time here in Sumatra!
Indonesian Cooking Class

Learn to cook a selection of traditional Sumatran dishes with our head chef Kak Nur! Includes a trip to the traditional local market for ingredient selection, along with downloadable recipes so you can impress your family and friends back home with your Indonesian cooking skills! Pleas note, vegetarian and vegan options available.
Bukit Lawang Trust Volunteer Experience
Personal Donation
Experience a day in the life of a Bukit Lawang Trust volunteer, and help educate the local community! Take a guided tour around the school with ex head volunteer Lily, after which you can participate in English and conservation classes, or help with the upkeep or refurbishment of any of the community centres classrooms.
Donations of books, blackboard paint, equational toys and school supplies are always very warmly received!
Seasonal Rice Paddy workshop

Learn the secrets of rice farming with our beloved Mamak (mum). Mamak, otherwise known as Opung, has spent her whole life working in the paddy fields, and has sustained a wealth of knowledge which she would love to share with you. Please be aware the activities vary depending on the season, however refreshments and snacks are always included!
Yoga, on site or jungle retreat

The perfect activity to unwind after a hard expedition, our qualified instructor Louise can tailor each session to your specific needs, ability and preferences.
Please note all classes last 1-1.5 hours, and, sessions can be arranged at the Lodge site, or you can walk (1hr) to Louise's jungle side retreat.
Village Tour

Explore the surrounding local villages of Bukit Lawang and uncover the traditional processes of making tempe and brown sugar. This activity can be performed on bicycles or tuktuk depending on your preferences, and includes lunch and refreshments.
MPL Rubbish Pick-up & Trashbank tour
Personal Donations
Join us and Masyarakat Peduli Linkungan to clean up the 'life giving' water source that is our irrigation stream! After the clean-up you'll be taken to the Sumatra Trashbank to see how they process and reuse the pesky plastic you collected!
